PART A: Avoid the escalation of the situation

When chatting, if the other person gets angry, how to avoid the escalation of the situation?

(1)Apologize:

    If your words or actions have made the other person angry, start by expressing your apologies and acknowledging that you may have said or done something offensive or distressing. Show that you are willing to take steps to improve the situation.

(2)Explain clearly:

    The other person may be angry due to a misunderstanding or misinterpretation, so try to explain your point of view or intentions clearly to avoid further misunderstandings.

(3)Notice escalation:

       When you notice that the other person's emotions are escalating, try to pause and focus on diffusing the tense atmosphere. Avoid triggering their emotions further.

(4)Point out the issue:

      If you can identify the specific issue that has made the other person angry, try to calmly and objectively point out the problem and ask if they are willing to discuss and resolve it.

(5)Evaluate the situation:

     When conflicts arise, try to calmly assess the entire situation. Ask if the other person is willing to take a pause and reflect calmly or find a better solution.

(6)Divert attention:

     Sometimes, shifting the focus of the conversation from the conflict to lighter or more pleasant topics can help alleviate the tension. You can talk about something humorous or other enjoyable subjects to redirect the other person's attention.

(7)Let them talk:

Sometimes, people just need someone to listen to their emotions and thoughts. Give them some time and space to express their feelings, and show your care and understanding.

It's important to maintain calmness, respect, and understanding in such situations. Try to empathize with the other person's perspective and respond in a positive manner as much as possible.

There were also some campus incidents today:

(a) Election for the President of the Economics Department at NTU:

      During the election in the department, one of the candidates made politically incorrect remarks, sparking widespread controversy and discussion. These remarks might have violated certain values or caused dissatisfaction among different groups.

(b) Entrance performance at a certain school's sports event:

     During the entrance performance at the school's sports event, students from a particular class performed content that was considered politically incorrect, leading to numerous controversial incidents. This could involve sensitive political topics or the use of offensive language or symbols, creating a tense atmosphere on campus and sparking debates. Such events often trigger discussions on freedom of speech, cultural sensitivity, and campus values.
